Obituary

Garry Leonard Whitmore, 83, of John Day, OR passed away on Tuesday July 18th at his home.

Garry was born on October 18, 1939, in Newburg, OR to Leonard Martin Whitmore and Jesse Hariet (Versteeg) Whitmore. He attended and graduated from Nestucca Union Highschool 1958 and enlisted soon after. Garry spent 6 years in the service; some of that time as a Private First Class in the Marines, where he was awarded as an expert rifleman, and he served in the Navy as a Seaman E3.

On October 21, 1964, Garry married Alene (Stevens) Whitmore in Reno, NV.  They went on to raise four daughters and one son together. He worked as a Timber Cruiser for the Bureau of Land Management, retiring in 1994 after 32 years of service.

Garry enjoyed camping and was an avid all-around big game hunter, but took a shining to elk hunting. He grew up steelhead fishing on the Nestucca River, and continued to enjoy all forms of fishing, along with anything else the great outdoors had to offer.

He was a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, NRA, American Legion, and the Boone and Crocket Club. He was also a Boone and Crocket Record Book Member, American Legion President, Vietnam Veteran, and a steward of the great outdoors. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Garry is survived by his wife, Alene Whitmore of John Day, OR, daughters Teresa Anderson of Townsend, MT, Shellie Wiscarson of John Day, OR, Debra Howard of Townsend, MT, son Chris Whitmore of Creswell, OR, 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Jesse Whitmore, and daughter Cindie Oleson.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society through Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S. Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845.
